GULMARG SNOW SAFETY AVALANCHE ADVISORY: 01.06.12

"The current weak storm continues to deliver light snow totaling 20 cms. on Thursday. Winds remained light except near uppermost ridges where moderate Southerlies kept the second phase of the gondola closed. The next two days will see intensifying storm conditions. Forecast models suggest an additional 55mm of water. I expect the first widespread avalanche cycle to begin Friday evening.
The alpine avalanche hazard will increase to High on Friday afternoon.
During this period of High hazard, avalanches will be easily triggered, however due to limited available snow, avalanches will be small to moderate in size.
Expect a delay in operation of phase 2 of the gondola due to storming conditions on Friday and Saturday. Avalanche mitigation is scheduled for Sunday."

"Sixteen tourists were injured, three of them seriously, in a traffic accident on the Tangmarg-Gulmarg road on Wednesday, reports said. Coming down from the ski-resort, the tourist bus (JK02AC-6267) had plunged down a 40-foot ravine after skidding off the road due to slippery conditions, they said. The accident occurred at around 3 in the afternoon today near the Sharabi Moad, the police said. The bus had been carrying 40 passengers from various parts of Delhi.

"High altitude areas of Kashmir Valley including famous skiing resort of Gulmarg on Wednesday received fresh snowfall. The snowfall started in the upper reaches and in some areas of the plains in the Valley around noon, ending an almost 15-day long dry spell, official sources said. They said the famous resort of Gulmarg, 52 kms from summer capital Srinagar, witnessed a brief spell of snowfall. About an inch of snow had accumulated on the ground."

When we did get up top we just hiked along the ridge until we found a bowl that was untracked and dropped in. The snow quality varied from wet to blower to windpacked to everything in between depending on elevation and aspect, but all in all, it was great. One day we did ski down to Drung and skied through the town which was fun... I think I had 6 or 7 local kids hanging off me and standing on my skis at one point which made it hard to stay standing, but they were great."

"I had heard that Gulmarg is great when the gondola is open, but that there is not much to do when the gondola isn’t running. Lies, falsehoods, blasphemy. As long as your willing to get off your ass you can ski all day every day. Amazing tree runs, psychotic Sumo rides, everything is possible.

Because of the wars between India and Pakistan, it was impossible to get a topographic map of the area, making it an area where it is pure guess and check as to steepness, hidden ridges and gullies, and where you will end up. Many of the runs you can do during storm days are down to lower roads where a Sumo will pick you up for another lap."

"The upper gondola finally opened at 1 pm. We made it up to the top and it was a mad rush to get strapped in and get to the pow. We traversed over to check out a possible run and were disturbed to see a nice rubble pile. Needless to say we turned around and worked the main line down the ridge and into the second of the main bowls. After regrouping again I asked if I could meet them at the bottom. The main area terrain is pretty straight forward. I dropped in and pointed it straight for awhile and then dropped in to a 150 foot heelside carve. I cranked out a couple more turns before dropping in to the main gully in the center of the main bowl. There were two tracks in the gully, a safe exit to the right and I was going about 50 plus so I wasn’t to worried about getting hit by a slide from above, but it was still a risk. 1,500 vertical feet of wind consolidated sugar in a perfect natural half pipe was the reward. Sickness. The 193 was made for this terrain. I got the mid station and waited for longer than I should have for the rest of the group. The gondola was shut down. I am not sure if it was weather, lack of power, or lack of interest. I think it was mostly because the top was completely socked in. Zero visibility. There were about 80 people waiting and no word on when the top would re open. We hiked out to far skiers left and got perfect untracked fluff all the way to the hotel. One run from the top and all I can think of is how I want more."
